Where does resveratrol come from?

3. It may help protect collagen by acting before and during its breakdown
It is common to say that resveratrol “supports collagen”, but that phrase can be misleading because collagen is not controlled by one simple switch.
Skin firmness depends on the balance between collagen production, organisation and degradation. Fibroblasts in the dermis produce collagen, while enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases—particularly MMP-1—help break down damaged or ageing collagen so that tissue can be remodelled.
This is a normal process. The difficulty is that repeated UV exposure and oxidative stress can increase MMP activity beyond what is useful. Collagen fibres are then fragmented faster than the skin can replace and organise them. Over time, the dermal structure becomes less dense and less able to provide the same support.

This does not mean resveratrol simply “builds collagen”. A better description is that it may help create conditions in which less collagen is unnecessarily damaged and the skin’s normal remodelling processes can proceed with less interference.
